Quick Answer:

We know the first day of daycare feels like a big step for both of you. At Big Little Paws, we start slow and gentle. First comes a free meet-and-greet so your dog meets us and sees the space. Then a trial daycare day lets them test it out with no pressure. Try to keep the morning as normal as possible. A quick, happy goodbye usually works best. Most dogs do better when we don't drag it out. Bring only the basics: collar or harness, food if they eat here, and any meds. Leave toys, beds, and blankets at home. We have plenty to make it feel cozy. Most dogs settle in after a few visits. We watch them closely and give extra love so they start to relax and have fun with us.

If you’re thinking about trying dog daycare for the first time, you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. That’s completely normal! We are here to help!

One of the biggest things we tell new dog parents is this: a good daycare experience starts before the first drop-off. Preparation, pacing, and the right environment make all the difference in how quickly a dog settles in and starts to enjoy themselves.

Here’s what to know and how we help set every dog up for success from day one.

Is My Dog Ready for Daycare?

This is usually the first question we hear, and the answer isn’t about having a “perfect” dog.

Most dogs do well in daycare if they:

  • Are curious or neutral around other dogs

  • Can handle new environments without shutting down

  • Don’t show aggressive behavior toward dogs or people

Dogs don’t need to be overly playful or confident right away.

Some of our best daycare dogs started off a little unsure. They just needed the right introduction and routine.

After they've settled, we've seen huge improvements in their behavior! Gone are the nerves and outcomes the playful, social side of them!

A quick story: One lab named Moose came over for the first day and nervously barked the entire time. We were wondering if we wouldn't be a good fit, but after talking with his parents, we learned the commands they used at home to calm him down. We gave him extra attention so he knew that we were on his side.

After the second daycare day, he fit right in! His anxiety went away, his nervous barks stopped, and his parents tell us how excited he is to come over every Wednesday!

What to Expect on Your Dog’s First Day of Daycare

Some dogs jump right in. Harry, a long haired dachshund, came in like he owned the place...he has a huge personality!

Others take a little time, like Moose and many others. Both are completely normal!

It’s very common for dogs to:

  • Stick close to us

  • Be a bit unsure at first

  • Observe before fully engaging

The meet & greet helps a lot with this, and we often see big improvements after the first couple of visits. Once dogs come back a few times, they usually fall right into the routine and LOVE coming here!

How to Prepare Your Dog for Daycare at Home

If possible, we recommend giving your dog a walk before daycare — though we completely understand that isn’t always realistic with work schedules.

During the day, we take dogs on 1–2 pack walks, along with plenty of supervised play and rest.

Keeping your morning calm and routine helps more than over-exercising or hyping your dog up.

For the safety of every dog in our care, all dogs are required to be fully up to date on their vaccines before attending daycare or boarding. This is a non-negotiable part of maintaining a healthy, safe group environment where dogs can relax, play, and thrive.

What to Bring (and What Not to Bring) to Dog Daycare

You don’t need much!

What to Bring

  • A collar and harness (important for safety and walks)

  • Food, if your dog needs to eat during the day

  • Any required medication

What You Don’t Need

  • Toys

  • Beds

  • Blankets

We have all of those and don't want any of yours to get dirty.

Most dogs settle in better without extra items from home.

Common First-Day Concerns Dog Parents Have

“What if my dog is nervous?” That’s normal! We take things slow and will give them extra attention to settle in. We'll also communicate with you if any concerns come up.

“What if they don’t play right away?”Totally fine. Watching is part of the process. They might open up later or just rather be on the sidelines!

“Will my dog miss me?” It depends! Most likely on the first day. Learning that you come back is a big part of why daycare builds confidence over time. After that? They probably can't wait to come here!

We consistently see dogs improve after the first few days, especially once they recognize the routine and familiar faces.

Why Many Working Dog Parents Choose Daycare Instead

One of the best compliments we hear is when owners tell us how excited their dogs get right when they turn onto our street!

That tells us everything.

Daycare gives working dog parents:

  • Peace of mind during long workdays

  • A calmer, happier dog at home

  • Fewer behavior issues from boredom or loneliness

Another thing we see a lot...dogs not wanting to go home! If this happens to you, don't take it personally. They have a lot of their friends here!

Our daycare hours are 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM, with flexibility built in.

Most drop-offs happen between 8:30–9:30 AM, but we open earlier for commuters. Pick-ups usually happen between 4–6 PM, with later options when needed.

Setting Your Dog Up for Success at Daycare

Preparing your dog for daycare isn’t about forcing confidence — it’s about choosing a place that moves at your dog’s pace.

A thoughtful onboarding process:

  • Prevents bad daycare experiences

  • Protects every dog in the group

  • Helps dogs settle in faster and stay long-term

When dogs feel safe, supported, and understood, daycare becomes something they genuinely look forward to — and that’s when everyone wins.
